We ate camel!

Ok don’t get all bent out of shape yet. We bought the camel at Findlay Market (Our local farmer’s market) and the camel is Australian where I hear they have the largest herd of wild camel’s anywhere in the world thus making them a nuisance since they aren’t native. To contribute, we thought we’d help the camel issue by eating some.

But what to do with camel? Camel burgers? Meatballs? Chili?

Shisk Kebabs we decided were definitely the way to go. So we picked up some purple and green peppers, some potatoes and off we went. Recipe after the photos.

Camel

It’s pretty simple really. To get the full essence of your camel you need to add a little salt and just go for it. But since camel was new, we did some straight up and some spiced.

For 8 camel shisk kebabs (feeds 4 hungry adults)

Ingredients:
4 med peppers (any color, we used purple & green)
3 med baking potatoes
1 lb ground camel
1/2 lb fresh mushrooms
1 bunch of garlic (10 cloves or so will do)
Indian Curry
Thyme
Sage
Rosemary
Garlic
Olive oil

Directions:

Cut peppers into large sections.
Cut your potatoes into large chunks.
Add rosemary, garlic powder or fresh minced, thyme & sage to potatoes along with olive oil.
Bake in oven at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

Roll 1/2 lb of camel into meatballs
Add 1 tsp of curry, garlic powder or fresh minced, & fresh ground black pepper to other 1/2 lb of camel
Mix well by hand
Roll this 1/2 lb of camel into meatballs
Bake in oven for 15 minutes at 350

Skewer all of your ingredients on some sticks (feel free to vary the placement of your veggies (See above photo)
Grill on open flame for ~10 minutes.
Rotate as needed.

Imbibe.

Let me know what you think!

Slight update.

It tasted great. Camel is very lean which is nice for your health but it does dry out quicker. The curry added a nice spice and I would definitely spice all of the camel next time around. If you’ve never tried camel I definitely recommend trying pure camel first. And the veggies were awesome. Purple pepper taste almost exactly like green pepper. And how could you not love a roasted clove of garlic? So good! Just remember to brush your teeth after this dish.

Tons of things going on lately hence the lack of blogging. Lots of great meetings and time with friends lately. Here are a few food shots to make you drool.

cake!

Instead of shopping like every one else and their mom, yestersay we stayed at home. And baked. Like it was going out of style. We baked for breakfast. And we reheated some homemade pizza in the oven, and then we took a break to go see “A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant” at the Know. I’d recommend it, if you’re into that kind of thing. And clearly, we are. Kids, and musicals. Good lighting, and little theatres. Not scientology. Nor did that involve baking. But it’s what we did, between baking, because man can’t live on bread alone. He’s needs a little comedy too.

And then we came home and baked some more. Almost solely in preparation for Thanksgiving #4. That’s right Vince Vaughan & Reese Witherspoon. 4! We are going to four of these things, and all before you go to your four Christmas’s. So take that. I bet you can’t do 5…

So feast your eyes on our baking prowess. Everything is homemade. No boxes or premixed bags. Just us, our hands, and some flour and spices. Plus a little sugar.

dough

I really enjoy cooking. From scratch. It’s relaxing. I love creating something new without a recipe especially. So today is no exception. This is today’s version of my homemade dough. It started off as something a friend passed along and it always morphs and changes according to the whims of my taste buds. Today it has some added herbs and spices, and a tiny kick. In a couple hours this will have became a thin crust pizza covered in sauce and fresh vegetables from the farmer’s market. It’s been a while since I made one of these so I’m pretty pumped. If you want some, well you should call me and we can hang out sometime. Not tonight, because I’m hanging out with my wife, and no offense, but she’s way cooler than you, that’s why I married her. So until we hang out, enjoy the picture of my dough. Freshly kneaded, and risen, to a bubbly perfection.

toffee nut

So my wife is a huge fan of Toffee Nut. (I am too, but it’s more of a secret) For her birthday she got an espresso maker and look what came today! Two huge bottles of this golden juice.
In other news, I added a couple of links to the side bar so you can find me in a few other places. Check ‘em out if you’re bored. (Or if you really just like my stuff.) No stalkers please.
